1. SPRING!
As you can tell, March easily springs to the top of the best-month list. The sun shines a little brighter, the air gets a little fresher, and plants get a little greener. March, to me, represents the refreshing and renewing of all things. People in Colorado are springing around in shorts and flip flops (but, then again, they were doing that in mid-December…) and birds are beginning to sing their spring songs. I hope you enjoy this revitalization as much as I do. And imagine: if spring is this wonderful here, what would it be like in Peru, Tanzania, or Costa Rica?

Nora’s Thank You
At Global Explorers our mission is to inspire responsible global citizenship by providing life-changing travel experiences for students and educators of all abilities and backgrounds. In 2010 Global Explorers received a grant from the Oak Park River Forest Community Foundation’s Crystal Fund to send 10 students and one educator from Chicago on an expedition to Costa Rica. The Crystal Fund supports grants for an extended “away from home” cultural or educational experience that provides a skill, knowledge and/or personal value as a means of support. We love finding partners and sponsors who share our mission of providing opportunities to students who would not otherwise have the means to travel. Together, we can support high-achieving students like Nora, who was a traveler on the inaugural Crystal Fund and Global Explorers expedition in June 2011.
Last month, we received the following thank you note and reflection letter from Nora:

Introducing Soldiers to Summits
A lot of exciting events have been happening with a new program we are partnering with called Soldiers to Summits (S2S). This program helps empower veterans to overcome physical and mental barriers. Each year, thousands of wounded veterans return home from Iraq or Afghanistan. Soldiers to Summits provides camaraderie to wounded veterans and helps them restructure their lives and prepare for their future.
Soldiers to Summits was created by Jeff Messner, Erik Weihenmayer, and the team that helped Erik reach the top of Mt. Everest in 2001, when he became the only blind person in history to reach the summit. Erik, who is also the only blind person to reach the top of the Seven Summits, has participated in many Global Explorers expeditions and is a valued member of the GEx Family.
In October 2010, the team led eleven disabled military veterans to the Himalayan summit of the difficult 20,075-foot Mt. Lobuche, providing a challenging environment for self reflection, perseverance, healing, and ultimately, transformation.
This extraordinary expedition celebrating courage and the enduring human spirit was depicted in the documentary “High Ground,” by Oscar-nominated producer Don Hahn and award-winning director Michael Brown.
