Thoughts Under a Night Sky
I was standing under the stars in Estes Park, Colorado, one chilly October night when I fully realized the true interconnectedness of the world that has attracted me to travel for so many years. Standing beneath the beautiful landscape of the sky and the timeless history that accompanies it, I was sucked into the vastness and endless boundaries of the universe. One person in our star-gazing group asked, “I wonder if generations of the future will be able to appreciate what we are looking at now.” I wondered, to myself, “I wonder if people NOW, from all over the world, are able to appreciate what we are looking at now.”
Throughout all of my travels, I have found that human beings, no matter what background, ethnicity, or race, are able to connect with one another on some level, but I was never able to fully understand what it was that brought us all together. Language barriers, cultural differences, and even social status can all become overwhelming obstacles in relating to people of different backgrounds, but I always felt something deeper, something bigger than language or social taboos, uniting us all. Standing underneath the stars I realized that we, as a human race, are so unique to the universe that no matter how many different kinds of people or different countries or different beliefs, we are all one in the same and we all carry with us a unique ability to experience humanity. Though people from different backgrounds can seem worlds apart one thing binds us together: life.
I was shaken and overwhelmed by the intense feeling of revelation this brought on, but more than anything I felt a huge rush of gratitude and appreciation for my existence in the world. I was comforted that no matter where my travels or journeys or obstacles may take me, I will always be able to look into the sky and reflect on the same beauty that people in every corner of the world are able to see. The connection with other people is what has driven my desire to travel, and looking up into the boundless sky on a cloudless night confirms every belief I have that human beings, at our very core, are all connected by our existence.
