Full Scholarships to Cambodia
High school students and educators can earn a chance to visit Cambodia on a fully-funded three-week cross-cultural exchange program during the summer of 2011. GEx won a competitive national grant to manage the American Youth Leadership Program with Cambodia, a program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Youth Programs Division. Students and educators from targeted regions will be selected after a rigorous application and interview process and all accepted students receive a full scholarship to participate in the program. The American Youth Leadership Program is a new program that is part of the U.S. Department of State’s efforts to encourage more Americans to travel abroad and to offer American citizens different opportunities to learn about global issues through cross-cultural exchange. The Cambodia program will emphasize the themes of Environment, Climate Change, Conservation and Sustainable Development. The Global Explorers program targets students and educators from five regions: Washington, DC, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco Bay Area and the Colorado Front Range.
Like all Global Explorers programs, the Cambodia program goes far beyond a typical student travel experience. The program will challenge participants to think critically about the world and their role in it and feel the empowerment that comes with an authentic, fun, adventurous and educational cross-cultural experience. The program follows a 3-phase model: 1. Preparatory Learning, 2. International Expedition, and 3. Follow-up Leadership Action. Through all of these phases, students learn about our core subject areas of leadership, service, science and culture through hands-on activities. Global Explorers strives to inspire curiosity and reflection, and ultimately encourage students to use the experience as a way to enhance their own lives and the lives of those around them. Special thanks to the Afar Foundation and Learning Afar for their participation in this program!
