What Do Students Say?
Michelle Leading the Way 2008, Age 20
Global Explorers has helped me achieve my goals. It helped me become more organized, efficient, goal-oriented, and confident. Before I started this program, I wasn’t as confident, self-sufficient, or as organized as I am right now.
I never traveled by myself like I do now. Since I went to Peru with the Leading the Way program [in 2008], I’m not scared of the unknown. I’ve traveled all the way across the country by myself to go to school and learn a trade. Now I’m currently studying to be a Registered Piano Technician at the School of Piano Technology for the Blind in Vancouver, Washington.
Global Explorers has helped me to understand the hard work it takes to accomplish a goal and be successful in life. The greatest thing I’ve taken away from this program is that blindness is not a handicap, it’s a condition that must be overcome. In order for me to be a successful person and a contributing member of society I must not be afraid to succeed.
Life is what you make of it. Just like when we were on the trail, there was danger all around us and we kept going ahead. I plan to make my life as normal as anyone’s by working twice as hard and never giving up.
